EATING DISORDERS

Eating disorders are complex mental health conditions involving persistent disturbances in eating behaviors, body image, and emotional regulation. While often associated with food and weight, they are rooted in a combination of biological, psychological, and social factors. They affect people of all genders, ages, body sizes, and backgrounds, and can have serious consequences for both physical and mental health.

For many, the eating disorder functions as a method of adaptation: an attempt to self-regulate overwhelming emotions, manage stress, or maintain a sense of control. These coping strategies can provide a sense of stability in the short term but often become harmful over time, interfering with daily life, relationships, and well-being. Understanding the eating disorder as part of a broader pattern of adaptation is an important step toward meaningful and lasting recovery.

OUR APPROACH TO TREATMENT

At ParityWell, we approach eating disorder treatment through a primarily psychodynamic lens, with the therapeutic relationship at the center of the work. We explore the emotional, relational, and historical factors that shape a person’s relationship with food and body, creating space for insight, self-compassion, and growth. We integrate a behavioral perspective to support concrete, sustainable change by helping clients identify patterns, develop alternative coping strategies, and navigate daily challenges. Our approach is aligned with Health at Every Size (HAES) principles and grounded in harm reduction, meeting clients where they are while fostering safety and trust. We collaborate closely with dietitians, physicians, psychiatrists, and other care providers to ensure meal support, medical stabilization check-ins, and coordinated treatment. This comprehensive approach allows us to address both the deeper meaning of symptoms and the skills needed for long-term recovery.
