Neurodiversity-Affirming Therapy in New York City

If therapy has ever felt like a place where you had to justify how you think, feel, or process the world, you’re not alone. Non-affirming therapy often leaves people feeling misunderstood and drained.

At ParityWell, we take a different approach. Neurodiversity-affirming therapy is a core part of our practice. Our therapists in New York City work with Autistic adults, adults with ADHD, and people with AuDHD without ever treating neurodivergence itself as a problem. Instead, we focus on your full cognitive profile, recognizing and addressing co-occurring experiences such as anxiety, depression, trauma, addiction, burnout and OCD so that care is both accurate and meaningful.

ParityWell offers in-person neurodiversity-affirming therapy at Columbus Circle in Midtown Manhattan near Central Park. We also offer online neurodiversity-affirming therapy for adults across NYC, New York State, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.

Comprehensive Assessments
From Day One

At ParityWell, every client receives a thorough clinical assessment at the start of treatment regardless of what brings them in. We screen all clients for Autism, ADHD, trauma, OCD, and co-occurring mental health conditions because we believe it’s the therapist’s responsibility to identify what’s present and refer for testing if needed, not the client’s responsibility to know what to ask for.

Neurodivergence can often be misdiagnosed or missed in adults  — particularly among women, queer, trans, and BIPOC individuals — and can be masked by intelligence and adaptive coping. The day-one assessment helps us understand the full picture so treatment targets the right things from the start, rather than addressing symptoms without identifying their source.

You’ll leave your first appointment with clarity, not just a follow-up date.

A spiraling plant repeats itself like a ruminating mind.

What Is Neurodiversity-Affirming Therapy?

Neuroaffirming or neurodiversity-affirming therapy is a type of talk therapy that does not see neurodiversity as a problem to be fixed. Neuroaffirming therapy believes that neurodiversity is a complete and valid way of being, and centers respect for each person’s lived experience.

At ParityWell, we follow these core values in neuroaffirming care:

  • We do not treat Autism or ADHD as disorders to be corrected. At the same time, we don’t minimize the impact of not having tailored support over time.

  • We do not use compliance-based approaches like ABA or behavioral techniques designed to suppress Autistic or ADHD traits.

  • We adapt our communication style, session structure, and pacing to your unique cognitive profile, not the neurotypical way.

  • We understand masking, burnout, rejection sensitive dysphoria, and the specific ways anxiety, depression, and trauma present in neurodivergent people.

  • We recognize that many neurodivergent adults have had invalidating or actively harmful experiences with mental health systems. We work to earn trust, not assume it.

  • We respect neurodevelopmental differences as legitimate and valuable parts of the human experience

Why People Seek Neuroaffirming Therapy

ParityWell therapists work with neurodivergent men, women and adults across all gender identities, sexual orientations, and cultural backgrounds in New York City and the surrounding area. These are some of the more common reasons people seek neuroaffirming care:

  • Many Autistic adults who come to ParityWell have spent years in environments that required them to perform a version of themselves that didn’t fit. Some received a diagnosis recently. Others have suspected for years.

Our neuro-affirming approach meets Autistic adults where they are, without agenda or timeline. Learn more about autism therapy in NYC.

  • ADHD adults rarely look like the hyperactive child who can’t sit still. It more resembles forgetfulness, panics around deadlines, and the tendency to freeze or daydream when the work isn’t actively engaging. We believe that ADHD people have many strengths that reveal themselves when they are adequately supported with effective therapy.

Neuroaffirming therapy for ADHD means understanding how your brain actually works, not measuring it against a neurotypical standard. Learn more about ADHD therapy in NYC.

  • IColloquially, the combination of ADHD and Autism is called AuDHD. The two neurodevelopmental differences interact in ways that can make each harder to identify and harder to support if you’re only looking at one of them.

Our therapists understand the overlap, how each can mask the other, and what treatment needs to look like when both are present.

  • Receiving an Autism or ADHD diagnosis as an adult is a significant experience. It often brings relief, but possibly also grief, anger, and the need to reframe an entire life history.

Many clients describe a period after diagnosis of intense questioning: what was actually me, and what was performance? Neuroaffirming therapy provides space for that process without rushing it toward any particular conclusion. Most importantly, in the context of supporting late diagnosed and often high achieving/gifted adults, it seeks to affirm differences while accessing and leveraging your unique strengths.

  • Autistic burnout is a state of profound exhaustion caused by prolonged masking and chronic stress. It can look like depression but has a distinct profile: loss of previously held skills, increased sensory sensitivity, withdrawal, and a specific connection to the demands of masking.

Standard depression treatment is often insufficient. At ParityWell, we assess for autistic burnout specifically and adapt treatment accordingly.

The Importance of Identifying Co-Occurring Conditions

Neurodivergence rarely arrives alone. At ParityWell, we treat the full picture to get at the roots. The most common co-occurring conditions we work with include:

  • Anxiety: The most common co-occurring condition in autistic adults and extremely common in ADHD. Often undertreated because it’s attributed to the neurodivergence itself rather than recognized as a distinct, treatable condition. Learn more about anxiety therapy in NYC.

  • Depression: Chronic misunderstanding, underachievement relative to potential, and the exhaustion of masking all contribute to depression in neurodivergent adults. Learn more about depression therapy in NYC.

  • Trauma: Disproportionately common in neurodivergent adults. Years of being misunderstood, bullied, coerced into compliance, or inadequately supported academic or healthcare systems leave real traumatic impact. Learn more about trauma therapy in NYC.

  • OCD: OCD and autism frequently co-occur and can be difficult to distinguish. We screen all clients for OCD at the first appointment because treating anxiety or repetitive behaviors when OCD is present requires a different approach.Learn more about OCD therapy in NYC.

  • Autistic burnout: A distinct presentation that requires specific clinical understanding — not just depression treatment applied to a burnout presentation. Learn more about autism therapy in NYC

  • Substance use and addictive behavior: Years of masking can lead to coping via substance use or addictive behaviors like gambling, sex, gaming, or excessive screen time.

Our Neuroaffirming Approach to Therapy

There is no single therapeutic modality for neurodivergent adults because the neurodivergent experience is not a single thing. At ParityWell, treatment is built around the individual and adapted from a range of evidence-based approaches to fit how you actually process the world:

  • EMDR: For neurodivergent adults with significant trauma histories, EMDR provides a pathway to processing that doesn’t require sustained verbal engagement with difficult material. Learn more about EMDR therapy in NYC.

  •  IFS: A parts-based approach that is particularly well-suited to neurodivergent adults who have developed distinct internal parts around masking, shame, and exhaustion. Learn more about IFS therapy in NYC.

  • ACT: Builds psychological flexibility and a different relationship with difficult thoughts and feelings without requiring clients to challenge or reframe them in ways that can feel invalidating.

  • Psychodynamic therapy: For clients working through identity, late diagnosis, or the deeper narrative of their life, psychodynamic therapy provides space without agenda or time pressure.

  • Adapted CBT and ERP (either separate or together): Cognitive restructuring and behavioral approaches modified to account for Autistic and ADHD cognitive styles, sensory profiles, and emotional regulation patterns. Learn more about CBT therapy in NYC.

Online or In-Person

Our therapist office is in Midtown Manhattan at Columbus Circle on Central Park South, accessible by the subway from the Upper West Side, Upper East Side, Chelsea, and parts of Brooklyn and Queens.

We understand that sensory and logistical demands vary, so if you have specific needs around the in-person environment, we’re happy to discuss them ahead of your first appointment.

We also offer online neurodiversity-affirming therapy for adults across New York State, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.

For many neurodivergent clients, online therapy is preferable as it removes the sensory and social demands of traveling to an unfamiliar space and allows sessions from an environment where you’re already comfortable and regulated.

Formal Neuropsychological Assessments

Some people want a formal neuropsych diagnosis for workplace accommodations, to access medication, or simply for the clarity of knowing. ParityWell offers comprehensive psychological assessments for autism, ADHD, and AuDHD.

A formal diagnosis can open doors that self-identification alone doesn't: legally protected workplace accommodations under the ADA, access to ADHD medication through a prescribing provider, and a documented foundation for any future evaluations or support needs.

If you’re considering a formal assessment, we will walk you through what the process involves, what the report includes, and how to use the results. Learn more about our formal autism assessments and ADHD assessments in NYC.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • This is one of the most common things we hear from neurodivergent clients. Previous therapy that felt invalidating, misattuned, or actively unhelpful is an extremely common experience and almost always reflects a mismatch between the client’s needs and the therapist’s training.

At ParityWell, we conduct a comprehensive assessment from the first appointment specifically to understand how your brain works and what you need. We take our lead from you. And we don’t proceed with any approach that isn’t working.

  • No. Many adults come to ParityWell self-identified, in the process of seeking a formal evaluation, or simply recognizing that previous therapy hasn’t accounted for how their brain works. You don’t need a diagnosis to begin therapy.

If formal assessment would be useful  for self-understanding, workplace accommodations, or other reasons, we offer comprehensive autism and ADHD assessments and can discuss the process with you.

  • Yes. ParityWell offers affirming care for clients across the full spectrum of sexual orientations and gender identities — including gay, lesbian, bisexual, queer, trans, nonbinary, gender fluid, genderqueer, asexual, aromantic, and gender expansive adults.

We recognize that LGBTQ+ and gender diverse people face specific stressors that are clinically relevant and not incidental: minority stress, family rejection, discrimination, and the cumulative impact of navigating a world that frequently misunderstands or pathologizes who you are.

There is also a well-documented overlap between neurodivergence and gender diversity; trans and nonbinary people are significantly more likely to be autistic or have ADHD, and neurodivergent people are significantly more likely to be gender diverse.

Many of our clients are navigating both simultaneously, often alongside anxiety, depression, or trauma. At ParityWell, you don't need to choose which part of yourself to bring to therapy. We work with the whole person, together.

  • Yes. Men and people socialized as male are significantly underdiagnosed with autism and ADHD, and the ways neurodivergence presents in men are often missed or misattributed.

Therapy for neurodivergent men in New York City requires understanding that specific context. The pressure to perform, not need help, and the need to appear to have it together in a city that rewards relentless output can shape the way neurodivergent men respond to the world. These coping habits can be negative.

At ParityWell, we work with neurodivergent men without requiring them to fit a therapeutic mold that was never designed for them.

  • Yes. Many neurodivergent women arrive at ParityWell having spent years being told they were too sensitive, too much, or not trying hard enough, often with a string of diagnoses that never quite fit.

We understand the specific ways masking, socialization, and the pressure to be endlessly capable shape the neurodivergent woman experience, and we work with it directly.

  • Yes. BIPOC individuals are significantly underdiagnosed and underserved within neurodivergent mental health care. Autism and ADHD present differently across cultural contexts, and clinicians who lack cultural competency frequently miss or misattribute neurodivergent traits in BIPOC clients.

At ParityWell, we recognize that race, culture, and lived experience of systemic racism are not separate from the clinical picture, they’re part of it.
