Autism Therapy in New York City
Many Autistic adults who come to ParityWell have spent years in workplaces, schools, relationships, and even therapy offices that required them to perform a version of themselves that didn’t quite fit.
Some received a diagnosis recently and are still making sense of what it means. Others have suspected they were autistic for years without ever having it confirmed. Some arrive exhausted in a way that’s hard to explain, having held it together for so long that holding it together has become the problem.
At ParityWell, our autism therapy in New York City is neuro-affirming, which means we start from the premise that being autistic is not a problem to be corrected. Autism therapy is about helping you understand yourself, navigate a world that wasn’t always built for your brain, and build a life that fits who you are and who you want to be.
We offer in-person autism therapy near Columbus Circle in Midtown East Manhattan and online sessions for adults across New York State, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.
Assessments From Day One
At ParityWell, every client receives a thorough screening assessment at the start of treatment. We screen all clients for autism, ADHD, trauma, addiction and co-occurring mental health conditions because we believe it’s the therapist’s responsibility to identify what’s present, not the client’s responsibility to know what to ask for.
Autism in adults is frequently missed for years, particularly in people who developed strong masking strategies, or whose presentations don’t match the outdated stereotypes that have historically shaped diagnosis. The result is years of struggling without a framework that makes sense of the experience, and treatments that address symptoms without identifying the source.
Often our clients come to us with multiple secondary conditions that have developed as a result of supposed neurodevelopmental differences.
If autism is identified, we explain what we’re seeing, why it matters, and what an effective, tailored treatment plan looks like. You’ll leave your appointment with clarity.
Why New Yorkers Choose ParityWell for Autism Therapy
There is no single reason autistic adults seek therapy. New York City presents its own particular challenges including the sensory intensity of the subway, the social demands of open-plan offices in Midtown, the relentless pace that leaves little room for the recovery time many autistic people need. Some of the most common reasons our clients come to us include:
Autistic Burnout
Autistic burnout is a state of profound physical and mental exhaustion caused by prolonged masking, chronic stress, and the cumulative effort of navigating without adequate support.
It can look like depression, but it has a distinct profile such as loss of skills, increased sensory sensitivity, withdrawal, meltdowns, and an inability to keep doing things that were previously manageable. Autistic burnout is real, serious, and frequently misdiagnosed. Recovering from it requires a specific approach that standard depression treatment doesn’t provide.
Late Diagnosis and Identity
Receiving an autism diagnosis as an adult or arriving at self-identification after years of not having a framework is a significant experience. It often brings relief alongside grief, anger, and the need to reframe an entire life history.
Many of our clients describe a period after diagnosis of intense questioning: what was actually me, and what was performance? What do I actually want instead of wanting to fit in? Autism therapy provides the space to work through that process without agenda or time pressure.
Anxiety and Sensory Overwhelm
Anxiety is one of the most common co-occurring conditions in autistic adults, and it frequently goes undertreated because it is attributed to autism itself rather than recognized as a distinct, treatable condition.
Sensory overwhelm, social anxiety, and generalized anxiety all present commonly in autistic adults. The good news is that anxiety responds well to treatment when the approach is properly adapted for autism.
At ParityWell, we treat anxiety as its own clinical target while understanding how it interacts with the autistic experience.

AuDHD: Autism and ADHD
A significant proportion of autistic adults also have ADHD, commonly referred to as AuDHD. The combination produces a profile that is more than the sum of its parts: each condition can mask the other in assessment, the coping strategies that help with one often conflict with what helps with the other, and the cumulative load of managing both frequently leads to burnout that looks like neither.
At ParityWell, we assess for both from the start and build treatment plans that account for the full picture.

Trauma in Autistic Adults
Trauma is disproportionately common in autistic adults. Years of being misunderstood, bullied, coerced into compliance, or failed by systems that were supposed to help can leave significant trauma that shapes how a person moves through the world. For many autistic adults, trauma is the accumulated weight of a lifetime of “little t” traumas rather than one event.
We integrate adapted EMDR, IFS and other trauma-informed approaches alongside neuro-affirming therapy to treat trauma in autistic adults.

Neuro-Affirming Care
Neuro-affirming therapy is not just a marketing phrase at ParityWell. It means something specific about how we work:
We do not try to make autistic clients conform or become neurotypical
We identify and affirm your strengths
We give you concrete and direct feedback to help you overcome challenges.
We understand masking, burnout, and the specific ways anxiety, depression, and trauma present in autistic adults.
We adapt our communication style, pacing, and session structure for you
We follow your lead on what needs attention. You are the expert on your own experience.
We recognize that many autistic adults have had negative experiences with therapy or medical systems, and we work to build genuine trust before anything else.
Autism Therapy Approaches at ParityWell
There is no single type of therapy for autism because autism is not a single experience. Treatment is built around the individual what they need, and how their specific brain works.
CBT and ERP Must Always be Adapted for Autistic Adults
Standard Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) should always be adapted for autistic clients. This requires a therapist who understands how cognition, emotion, and behavior work differently in autistic brains.
Cognitive restructuring, for example, needs to account for the concrete, systematic thinking styles common in autism. Exposure work needs to account for sensory sensitivities and nervous system differences. At ParityWell, our CBT-trained therapists bring that understanding to every session. EMDR
For autistic clients with significant trauma histories, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) provides a pathway to processing that doesn’t require sustained verbal engagement with painful material. EMDR therapy is particularly well-suited to autistic clients who process experience in non-linear ways or find talk-based trauma work difficult to access.

Psychodynamic and Insight-Oriented Therapy
For autistic clients working through identity, late diagnosis, grief, or the deeper narrative of their life, psychodynamic therapy provides the space for that work without agenda or time pressure. It is particularly useful for clients who have spent years performing a version of themselves and are working out who they actually are underneath.
IFS
Many autistic adults arrive in therapy carrying “parts” that developed in direct response to a world that didn't understand them. Internal Family Systems (IFS) approaches these parts with curiosity rather than trying to eliminate them, asking what they've been protecting and how might we make those responses healthier.
For autistic adults working through late diagnosis, burnout, or social struggles, IFS offers a framework for self-understanding that doesn't require constant verbal emotional processing.
At ParityWell, IFS is integrated into autism therapy alongside adapted EMDR, and ACT where it fits the individual client.
ACT
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a natural fit for many autistic clients, particularly those dealing with burnout, rigid self-criticism, or a sense of disconnection from what actually matters to them.
ACT helps build psychological flexibility and a different relationship with difficult thoughts and feelings without requiring clients to challenge or reframe them in ways that can feel invalidating or inauthentic.
Autism Therapy vs. Full Neuropsychological Autism Evaluation
Therapy and evaluations serve different purposes. An autism evaluation is a diagnostic assessment that determines whether you meet criteria for an autism diagnosis. Therapy is ongoing support for living well as an autistic person.
You do not need a formal diagnosis to begin autism therapy at ParityWell. Many clients begin therapy while considering a formal evaluation, or because they identify strongly with the autistic experience regardless of formal diagnosis.
If diagnostic clarity would be valuable to you for self-understanding, workplace accommodations, or other reasons, we offer comprehensive autism evaluations.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a formal autism diagnosis to start therapy?
No. You don’t need a diagnosis to begin autism therapy at ParityWell. Many autistic adults, particularly those who identified late or are in the process of seeking a diagnosis, begin therapy before or without a formal evaluation. However, we do offer formal autism evaluations.
Is ADHD a form of autism?
No, ADHD and autism are two distinct neurodevelopmental conditions, though they frequently co-occur. Research suggests that around 50-70% of autistic people also have ADHD, and vice versa, which is why they can be easily confused. When both are present, the combination is sometimes called AuDHD and requires a treatment approach that accounts for both.
Do you work with autistic adults who were diagnosed late?
Yes, and this is a significant part of our work. Late diagnosis brings a specific set of experiences including relief, grief, reframing years of confusion, and rebuilding a sense of identity. Our therapists are experienced with this process and understand the particular challenges of navigating adulthood undiagnosed.
Is online therapy suitable for autistic adults?
For many autistic adults, it’s preferable. Online therapy removes the sensory and social demands of traveling to an unfamiliar office and allows you to engage from a comfortable, controlled environment. The evidence for online therapy effectiveness is strong across conditions.
Can therapy help with autism?
Yes, although let’s be clear: Therapy doesn't “treat” autism, and at ParityWell we wouldn't want it to. What therapy can do is help autistic adults navigate the real challenges that come with living in a world not designed for their brain and the aftermath of years of masking. The right therapy, delivered by a neuro-affirming therapist who understands autistic experience, can make a significant difference in quality of life.
What type of therapy is best for autism?
There's no single best therapy for autism and any therapist who tells you otherwise is probably thinking about autism too narrowly. For anxiety, adapted CBT and ERP have strong evidence. For trauma, EMDR is highly effective and particularly well-suited to autistic clients who find verbal processing difficult. For burnout, identity work, and late diagnosis, psychodynamic and insight-oriented approaches tend to be most useful. IFS and ACT are valuable across presentations for building psychological flexibility.
At ParityWell, we assess what's actually going on first and adapt the approach from there rather than applying a single modality to everyone.
